Since November is upon us, would anyone be interested in joining in here like the other poems (a collaboration) in creating an "Ode to Thanksgiving?" Here's a link to a few examples of an Ode. I just thought why not praise Thanksgiving. There are a few different rhyme scheme, so we can choose to make it ababcdecde etc. or ababcde. We can already choose how many stanzas we want and keep to a specific theme about describing weather and things we're thankful for in life. Anyone interested?

"Epistle to Miss Blount, on Her Leaving the Town, After the Coronation"

As some fond virgin, whom her mother's care

Drags from the town to wholesome country air,

Just when she learns to roll a melting eye,

And hear a spark, yet think no danger nigh;

From the dear man unwillingly she must sever,

Yet takes one kiss before she parts for ever:

Thus from the world fair Zephalinda flew,

Bad Poetry Contest

If your bad Jewish poetry can make us cringe, we want to read it.

August 18 is Bad Poetry Day! As Jews, this event is of the utmost importance, since Judaism has been responsible for some of the best poetry in the world. The Book of Psalms. The Song of Songs. Barry Manilow. No matter what the emotion, no matter the occasion, some poet has probably captured the sentiment perfectly in verse form--and, as likely as not, that poet might be Jewish.

As writers, words are our tools. As in any craft, you need the right tool for a particular job. In this challenge, you have to choose carefully, because you only get to use 25 words in total (not counting your title). Make us feel the poem; smell it, taste it, touch it, see it... don't cheat us, and don't cut us off or leave us hanging. this is something quick, an easy one to listen to the messages your writer's heart gives you.

I have several years worth of poetry and lyrics that I've never cataloged. The closest I've come is getting out the hard copies folder (I've lost scads on the computer so I don't trust them) and looking through a few pieces, getting frustrated, and sticking them back in the file drawer. I don't know how to divide them up. Has anyone done this with lyrics and poems? Thanks for your help!

A terzanelle is a rhyming poem, a combination of the Terza Rima's interlocking rhyme scheme and the repetition of the Villanelle.

(the Villanelle has only two rhymes and two lines are repeated four times each in the 19 line poem. It's very difficult to write, but is thought to be one of the most emotional of poems. It is also thought to be one of the hardest poems to write, and so I think its better left for later down the list .)

The Terzanelle is a softened form of the Villanelle, ...

I thought we could start with an easier type of poetry form called Sedoka. A Sedoka is a Japanese verse that contains a turn or a change in direction. It has the same subject matter, except the last three lines shift the poem in a different perspective. A Sedoka consists of two katauta poems in one, which are unrhymed three-line poems with a syllable rhythm of 5-7-7.

You can find a few examples from the Shadow Poetry site.

That doesn’t mean that you have to write ONLY sonnets in order to post, but we thought it might be fun to take some of the old standards and try our hand at them. Some of the most beautiful poems written are sonnets, so we can’t discount them.
