I meant to write this earlier this week, but homemade pasta can be a reasonably quick fix dinner. I cut my normal recipe in half - made about 8 oz. to make fettucini type noodles for two. It is super cheap, 1 cup of flour and 2 eggs and less than 30 minutes. I use a hand crank machine, but they can be rolled out and cut with a knife. Can be topped with salt, pepper, Parm or similar cheese, and olive oil, or a tomatoe based sauce. Add a salad and good bread and Voila! -- maybe $3 or $4 for ...

I made a small batch last night, I would classify as a disaster, but they are edible. They are very light and airy, but I need to tweak the recipe. I put them on a silicon sheet as required (by the recipe) in spoon size blobs but in 10 minutes it was one big, happy mass of stuff. I had to spoon the edges back as they cooled to get individual cookies. I'll reduce butter and sugar(they have a Praline flavor) and add more oats next round and hopefully add the recipe here. Quite simple and fast ...

When all else fails, hit the kitchen. Is that a motto? I am trying a new pastry recipe today for a tart. It is extremely time consuming - start to finish - that only the French can come up with such a procedure. And I bought some local Winesap apples the other day, something else I have never eaten or cooked, so it will be interesting what gets cobbled together. I will report the outcome, either way.

Dissolve 1 cup brown sugar in 3 cups water.
Found this article today... probably a bit late for Thanksgiving, but certainly something to remember.

I can't help but wonder if this isn't the start of a new penicillan if they keep looking into it...

We don't have Thanksgiving in Israel, per se. As I remind my Mom, who turns 90 in March, the Pilgrims never made it this far south.

It's difficult to get pumpkin or mincemeat pie but making them for the first time was so much fun.

They use lots of pumpkin here. Chunks are sold, cut from 20-30 lb whole squash that have a pale yellow exterior but the insides are hollow and lined with seeds just like the ones in the US.

I trimmed off the rind & seeds, and cut 2lb worth into ...

I can't believe my neighbor has these things growing on trees all over her yard and this is the first I've ever seen or heard of them. Here's a picture:

Apparently, Pawpaw is derived from papaya, though the northern tree was originally cultivated by Indians. (They must have been Indians that did a lot of migrating.) The fruit is anywhere from 2' - 6' long, plump, green, squishes when ripe and tastes like a banana. My neighbor just gave me one and I am about to give it a try.

Mmm. They ...

What do you do with the things? We picked a few up yesterday while passing a stand. They were huge and 5 for a dollar. Food just doesn't get much cheaper than that. And the day before the same fellow who sent over the bag of beans sent another bag full of potatoes. Zucchini? Potatoes? Here's a trick I learned from a friend some years back, slice your potatoes and fry them until they're just starting to brown on one side, then add in zucchine slices with the skins, and a little onion. Let the ...

These things are great! I'm having a cold, left over one now, on toast with a bit of ketchup. Rather than baking the loaf and heating up the house, just slice a hunk off the mix with your spatula and fry them in a pan. It takes minutes as opposed to hours and everyone can nab that crispy end piece.

Do you love 'em? Try layering the fresh green beans in a big pot (4-5 qt.) with one jar (any brand) of spagetti sauce and fresh, sweet Italian sausage, in bulk if you can get it, or skinned and broken up. Simmer this on low until the beans are tender. Nothin' better. I had these once in a fabulous Italian restaurant in Chicago. This was the best thing in the whole place, but I love green beans. It couldn't be easier and, to me, it's as good as a meal. We had some tonight and the whole pot is ...
