French anyone?

I'm wondering how to say perfectly "I understand that you speak French?" Or something close that sounds like someone who knows the language well. And even better, if there's a particular tone to the language when spoken in Haiti. I'll just use that one line, then explain things and move them back to English 101.

the mortgages... the ones that sorta helped put the economy in the crapper.... what the heck are the called? There was a word for them, and there is a wave of new ones coming due -- those ARM ones, but I can't think of what the ones were that started the ball rolling.

... or an illness maybe?

I have a character who needs to be sick with something that is very hard to treat. Maybe some illness that we thought we had beat. The setting is a modern day full-blown depression so medical services are sparse, money is non-existent, supplies are not always readily available. Any suggestions? (I'm not sure if I want it to kill him or not yet, so I'm keeping that option open)

explanation needed - what is a Rep Tie?

I have always understood that a 'rep tie' is a necktie that has certain colored stripes that correspond to certain schools, or school colors...something of that sort.

In the story I'm writing, I have a line I'd like to use and I wanted to make sure that I could reference the phrase 'rep tie' but now that I google it, and Wiki it, I find no mention anywhere.

I KNOW that I've read it somewhere before...can someone help me out? I know I'm not crazy, and did not make this up!

I don't know if this website link would be of help to anyone else on here, but I find it invaluable for research on places, countries, cafes, bars, restaurants, even monuments etc., for my own novels. You can capture the ambiance of even the most far flung and remotest places by reading about them and looking at the millions of photos.

The website is called VirtualTourist and there are over one million members there. I have been a member of said site for over seven years now; of course, you ...
