Skype? Anyone?

Post by JustaMan on Wed Jul 13, 2011 7:17 am

Anybody here use skype? I just finished setting up an account - I think or hope anyway. It was installed on our computers last fall, which is the same as last century to me, by a young Frenchman, along with a crash course of how-to in semi-English. I found the screen icon and went from there. When I got to the site, it already had an acct. set up in HIS name, but finally got one set up of my choice - again, I hope.

I got an email from him and said I will skype him tomorrow. I remember it as quite simple when he did it, but want it verified it is that simple if anyone here uses it.

I also found in the site that int'l phone calls can be done for pennies a minute. I has that service on the phone once, about 6 cents to UK, but had to pay about $12 per month whether I made calls or not. I think skype is pay as you go. Anybody use that?

I am trying to get to the 21st Century.

i haven't used it, but i have friends who swear by it, totally love it, and say its easy to use. anybody i would talk to would be in the US though, so i suspect international charges would apply, wouldn't they?

Nope. Skype itself is free because it uses the webcam on your computer, or like our old desktop doesnt have one so it is like online chat - I think literally - without video. With our laptop last fall everyone was on the screen and simply talking. I met his whole family one day.

It is the use of phone without a computer, but going through your skype account, that cost. I will guess you enter a code - skype addy or something- like using a prepaid card.

I use Skype regularly -- there's a skype contaxct button in my sig you can click if you're on skype for a tete etete with me. I swear by it -- far more secure than msn and the facebook meebo bullshit -- in fact skype have recently invested money in facebook and as of june 2012 skype will be replacing the onsite IM. The international calls are also a bonus -- free from skype to skype and an absolute minimum on credit to call elsewhere. Many businesses uses skype as their phone provider because of this.

Thanks Kie, that was my general understanding of it. I had known about it for several years but us low tech trogs don't move too fast.

that won't last. they will find some way to screw that up.

Nope, that's it - as long as we're both on it. With Skype acct., a regular phone call works for super cheap rates.

I'm afraid I will get on and not know how to get off.

You could even both talk to me for free! That's from Canada (or America) to Wales, FREE!!! They've been ding it for years - I've been using it since IM first left the Universities and entered the home. I don't use the phone much because I don't like talking on the phone - but I use the IM regular. As I said, the big button in my sig is me, install Skype and click my button, go on - you know you want to!

I've also used Skype
I love it.... saves money on international calls, allows IM to become much more personal.

My aunt keeps in contact with her two grandchildren who are serving in Afghanastan.. and it allowed one of them to witness their 2 year old's Christmas morning..

Mary, just click on my button to add me
you can create your own button on the skype website

Once you start skyp[e - if you have another persons skype name (note: not email) then you click the 'contacts' tab and tap their name in there, first choose add contact of course, the you wait for them to accept your request, just like FB
